Business purpose
MT199 (Category 1) and MT299 (Category 2) are free-format messages — an escape hatch for any correspondent-banking communication that did not fit a defined structured message type: investigation queries, cancellation requests, general remarks, gpi tracker notes, ad hoc clarifications.
What does NOT map cleanly
There is no single replacement for every MT199/MT299 use. Swift maps investigation requests and responses to camt.110/camt.111 through Case Management; it names admi.024 for other bilateral correspondence and separate tracker notification messages for specified MT199/299 uses. These are business-purpose routes, not a field-for-field translation of arbitrary free text. Swift's in-flow translation may include an embedded MT199 inside camt.110 for a recipient that has not adopted Case Management.
Migration notes
The routes depend on the business purpose, and the Case Management migration timetable has changed. Swift's 21 September 2026 update assigns deferred exceptions-and-investigations message changes to 12 June 2027. Earlier November 2026 and November 2027 milestones in pre-deferral material should not be used as current deadlines without checking Swift's latest implementation guidance.
