Direct CBPR+ replacement

Business purpose

Request for Payment of Charges, Interest and Other Expenses — a financial institution requests reimbursement of charges, interest, or other expenses (previously unknown to the receiver) arising from handling a prior transaction. MT191 is the category-1 (customer/FI-facing) variant, MT291 the category-2 (FI-to-FI) variant; both carry an identical official name and differ only in SWIFT message category.

What does NOT map cleanly

camt.106 (ChargesPaymentRequest) is the correct designated counterpart to MT191/MT291 — do not confuse it with camt.105 (ChargesPaymentNotification), which instead corresponds to the related but distinct MT190/MT290 (Advice of Charges, Interest and Other Adjustments) pair, not covered on this page. camt.106 usage guidelines structure three sub-cases the MT191/291 free-text-leaning format did not cleanly separate: a single amount of charges, charges aggregated per transaction with a breakdown per charge type, and charges aggregated per charge type with a total — so while the message-for-message swap is designated, the internal structure is more prescriptive than the MT format.

Migration notes

camt.105/camt.106 went live as part of CBPR+ Standard Release 2024, but MT190/MT191/MT290/MT291 are not on the general November 2025/2026 CBPR+ retirement timeline — their migration deadline is November 2028, later than the core payments and exceptions/investigations migrations. Banks such as J.P. Morgan currently send and accept both MT191 and camt.106 in parallel.
