How it appears in an ISO 20022 statement

Nacha's mapping guide maps R01 to camt.053 reason code AM04 (Insufficient Funds) — ISO definition: Amount of funds available to cover specified message amount is insufficient.

Return time frame

Nacha's public rule pages refer to the standard "two-day" return time frame for returns that are not extended (unauthorized) returns. The governing time limit for this code is set in the Nacha Operating Rules, which Nacha sells and which were not used here, so it is not restated.

Can the entry be reinitiated?

Reinitiation is the route Nacha permits for resubmitting a returned entry, and its public rule page confirms it is restricted under Subsection 2.12.4 of the Rules: a reinitiated entry must carry identical Company Name, Company ID and Amount, must show RETRY PYMT in the Company Entry Description, and an entry reinitiated outside the Rules can be returned as R10 with a Written Statement of Unauthorized Debit. The permitted number of reinitiations and the window are set in the Rules themselves and are not stated on Nacha's public pages — confirm the current limits with your ODFI before any retry.

What an operator does next

The account did not have enough available balance. Decide retry timing from your own data on when the Receiver is usually funded; if you reinitiate, it must be within the Rules' limits and carry RETRY PYMT. Nacha's micro-entry guidance treats R01 and R09 as an overdrawn account that remains valid for future authorized entries — the authorization is not in question, only the funds.

PaymentBrief guidance, not Nacha text. Your ODFI's procedures and the current Nacha Operating Rules govern.

Where this comes up on PaymentBrief

Confidence: high. Status: verified. The Nacha Operating Rules govern. Nacha sells them and they were not used here; every statement above is taken from a public Nacha document or a public US Treasury or Federal Reserve document, named per statement. Where those documents are silent, this card says so of those documents — it is not a claim about everything Nacha has published.
